Sensex, Nifty Edge Higher In Early Trade

Indian shares opened flat to slightly higher on Friday as investors awaited macro data as well as key earnings reports for direction.

The benchmark BSE Sensex was up 80 points or 0.21 percent at 38,686 while the broader Nifty index was up 19 points or 0.17 percent at 11,616.

Asian Paints, GAIL, Tata Steel and BPCL climbed around 1 percent while HDFC, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors and Grasim were down between half a percent and 1 percent.

Jet Airways slid half a percent after Etihad Airways formally communicated its intent to raise its stake in the cash-strapped airline.

MRPL edged up slightly on reports it plans to shut a 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) crude unit and some secondary units for maintenance from mid-April for about a month.

TCS rose 0.6 percent and Infosys gained 0.9 percent ahead of their quarterly earnings results due today.

Bharti Airtel added 1 percent after the telecom department approved the merger of Tata Teleservices’ consumer mobility business with the company.
