In an interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung published on Wednesday, the European Central Bank’s (ECB) Governing Council member Jens Weidmann noted:
There is no reason for the central bank to expand its current asset purchase program as the economic assessment underpinning the current strategy is still intact.
The economic situation in the euro area has stabilized
The deflationary worries - which were already exaggerated at the beginning of the year - have faded further
Monetary policy should not let itself be influenced by the up and down of individual indicators for as long as the monetary assessment is still valid at its core
It’s not a big surprise that the Bundesbank doesn’t want to expand the QE. Meanwhile the euro/dollar falls to daily lows.
